A huge crowd of more than five thousand men, plus women and children, walked around the lake to hear Jesus teach on a grassy hillside. A Hungry Crowd on the Hill Thousands of people followed Jesus up a green grassy hill near the Sea of Galilee. They listened to his sweet teachings all day long. As the sun began to set, the people grew hungry. The disciples said to Jesus: "Send the crowds away to buy food in the villages, for we have nothing here to eat!" A Boy Shares His Lunch Jesus looked with compassion on the crowd and said: "You give them something to eat." Andrew spoke up: "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?" The little boy willingly handed his small lunch over to Jesus. Twelve Baskets Full of Leftovers Jesus told everyone to sit down on the green grass. He took the bread, looked up to heaven, gave thanks to God, broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to distribute. Everyone ate as much as they wanted! When everyone was full, the disciples gathered twelve baskets full of leftover pieces! Jesus did a mighty miracle with one boy's lunch.
