While David is in the cave stronghold of Adullam and a Philistine garrison occupies his hometown of Bethlehem, David expresses a heartfelt longing: "Oh, that someone would give me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem by the gate!"; his three chief mighty warriors (Jashobeam, Eleazar, and Shammah) boldly break through the enemy camp, draw water from the well, and bring it back; David refuses to drink the blood of the men who risked their lives and pours it out as a libation to the LORD.
