While Israel camps at Shittim, the people fall into gross immorality with Moabite and Midianite women and bow to Baal-peor; as weeping elders stand before the sanctuary, Phinehas son of Eleazar seizes a javelin and pierces an offending prince and Midianite woman, staying the deadly plague that had consumed twenty-four thousand; the LORD grants Phinehas an everlasting covenant of peace.
