Returning to Jerusalem after absence in Babylon, Nehemiah discovered grievous backsliding: he threw Tobiah the Ammonite’s furniture out of the temple storehouse, restored tithes to the Levites, enforced the Sabbath rest against foreign merchants, and banished the high priest’s grandson who had married Sanballat’s daughter.
Date: c. 432–430 BC · Note: Occurred during Nehemiah’s second governorship in Jerusalem after visiting King Artaxerxes in Babylon.
