When the Arameans see that they have been defeated by Israel, Hadadezer brings out the Syrians from beyond the Euphrates; King David gathers all Israel, crosses the Jordan, and arrives at Helam; in the ensuing battle, David slays Shobach the Syrian army commander and seven hundred charioteers with forty thousand horsemen, causing Hadadezer’s vassal kings to make peace with Israel and serve them.
